But there&#8217;s still a place for <b>little data.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Always Check your Arithmetic <i>or<\/i> &#8220;Every Cell Counts&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Spell checkers have taught us that overreliance on automation can make fools of us. It applies to number crunching too&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>These guys started with big data &#8212; statistics about every national economy. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-22223190\" target=\"_blank\">BBC news<\/a> tells us what happened later:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 10px 10% 10px 8%; background-color: #E6EBEC; padding: 4px 12px 12px 16px;\">\n<p>This week, economists have been astonished to find that a famous academic paper often used to make the case for austerity cuts contains major errors. Another surprise is that the mistakes, by two eminent Harvard professors, were spotted by a student doing his homework.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;After some correspondence, [the paper&#8217;s authors] provided [the student] with the actual working spreadsheet&#8230; [The student] spotted a basic error in the spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The problem?
